Nongthymmai is a town located in the East Khasi Hills district of the state of Meghalaya. According to the 2001 census, this town had a population of 34,209. The average literacy rate is 82% and the population percentage of males to females is 50% to 50%.
The name Nongthymmai comes from two Khasi words ‘Nong’ meaning village and ‘Thymmai’ meaning new’. These words literally translate to new village. Nongthymmai is well known for the presence of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). Though the NEHU has moved to Mawlai, there are still few departments located in Nongthymmai.
